Food Pantry
In
the fall of 2003 St. John's Outreach Committee decided to open
a food pantry to assist the homeless who frequently came seeking
emergency food. The Food Pantry started very small and grew rapidly
as word got out that food was available.
As the need
for food grew, we invited neighboring congregations to join
the effort making this an interfaith ministry. We now
have volunteers and food donations from from St. Bede's Episcopal,
First Church of Christ Scientist, Temple Beth Shalom, and Unitarian
Universalist.
We are also an agency of The Food Depot which
distributes food to all of Northern New Mexico. Each week our
volunteers pick
up fresh produce and breads as well as government commodities
food from The Food Depot on Siler Road in Santa Fe.
The Food Pantry is open to the public
every Monday and Thursday from 10am to Noon.
- There is no referral or proof of need required
to receive food from the Food Pantry.
- Customers are asked to
complete
a short
one-page form so that we can report demographic information
to the state.
- A family may come once per week to receive
bags of
fresh and nonperishable foods to supplement them for
one week.
We presently serve on average, more than 370 families
per week. Our customers range in age and degree of need. Some
are single
elderly or disabled folks on a fixed income others are
large families living on the edge of poverty.
Come Feed His Sheep with
us!
New volunteers are always welcome! If you are available to bag
and handout food or to do food pickups, please call the church
office.
